On the new model, Amazon says it's paying painstaking detail to the placement of characters on the screen, all in the name of proper "kerning" and "ligatures," or - put simply - in how neighboring pairs of letters cozy up to one another.īy way of example, Amazon points to the word "quietly," where the "y" loops under the "l" to make a chummy pair. That's a feature you will surely notice and appreciate.Īs with prior Paperwhite models, you can read in the dark, thanks to a built-in light.
What's more, the new Paperwhite gains a superb 300ppi 6-inch glare-free grey-scale display that not only provides twice the number of pixels of its predecessor, but that also matches the resolution of the Voyage screen. I reckoned Amazon would instead bring the feature to its top-of-the-line Kindle Voyage that starts at $199 for a Wi-Fi-only model and is the finest dedicated eReader I've used. (The price with and without ads for a Paperwhite with Wi-Fi and 3G cellular coverage jumps to $189 and $209, respectively.)
I'm mildly surprised that Amazon first brought Bookerly to the Paperwhite, which starts at $119 for a Wi-Fi-only model with so-called "special offers," or $139 without such ads.
